Course Curriculum
Learner Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the organizational planning necessary for a DON.
- Verbalize the DON Role in budget management in relation to resident acuity and staff management.
- Describe the essential steps in safety management of resident care.
- Identify key systems (Falls, Wounds, Infection Control, Pain, etc.) and how to ensure evidence based policies and procedures as well as consistent implementation are instituted.
- Verbalize the necessary key human resource “need to knows” for the DON.
- Describe the importance of relationships: Residents, Families, Administrator, IDT, Nursing Management Team, Staff, Medical Director, Pharmacy Consultant, Hospital Discharge Planners and Surveyors.
- Describe the DON’s role in medication management in the facility
- Verbalize the necessary staff education components
- Verbalize the DON’s role in oversight of MDS, Medicare management, reimbursement and related documentation systems.
- Verbalize the DON’s role in oversight of the facility nursing documentation system and follow through
- Describe the DON role in preparation and management of the survey process.
- Identify the DON’s role in Quality Assurance and QAPI in the facility.

In-Person November 13-14 and December 11-12th, 2024 from 8:00 – 5 pm

A minimum of 10 participants is needed to host the course. Maximum 25.
Pathway Health DON Manual is included with registration along with the credentialing exam.
Cancellation Policy: No refund will be given if canceled after October 28th, 2024, after 4:00 pm. There is a cancellation fee of $40 per attendee. Payment by check should be made by October 29th or a credit card payment is preferred. The full fee is due at time of registration..

A. Not at this time.
Q. Do I have to complete the entire course?
A. Yes, To receive the certificate of completion and receive the certification, you must complete the four sessions of the course.
Q. Can I only take a portion of the course?
A. No, at this time we can only offer access to the full course.
Q. Do I receive credentials to use behind my name when the course is over?
A. Yes, a credential can be used behind your name upon completing and passing the DON Basics Certification Course. You will receive a DON-C credential.
Q. Are there discounts for multiple attendees?
A. No, not at this time.
Q. Do you have to be a member of the Wisconsin Director of Nursing Council?
A. No. However, a registration discount is provided to members. The benefits of membership will help in other areas of your leadership. We offer an online discussion board to share and connect with others around the state. We have a Weekly Recap to summarize the important information of the week. We offer Wednesday Support Calls.
